Who we are
The Bridge To Liberty Inc is a Georgia nonprofit that helps newly arrived refugee families. This notice explains what we collect when you register, why, and what you can ask us to do with it.
What we collect
When you register, we ask for:
- Your name, date of birth, phone number and email
- Your home address (or that you don't have a fixed address yet)
- The members of your household
- The date you arrived in the United States
- Your rent and your resettlement agency
If you join a program, such as job matching or a welcome registry, we may ask for more, like a resume or your household's needs.
Why we collect it
We use your information only to:
- Create your BTL record and contact you
- Match your family with our programs: jobs, welcome registries, neighbor volunteers and holiday events
- Keep track of the help we give
We do not sell your information. We do not use it for advertising.
Who sees it
- Our team. Only team members who need it for your case can see your record. Each has a personal login.
- People we connect you with, only with your permission. For example, an employer for a job referral, or a host family for a holiday meal. We tell you what we will share first, and you can say no.
- Donors. If your family has a welcome registry, donors see only the list of items. They never see your name or address.
- Service providers. We use outside companies to host our website and send our emails. They handle your information only to provide that service.
- The law. We share information with authorities only if the law requires it.
Team members outside the United States
Some of our volunteers work from South Africa and may see records as part of their work.
How we protect it
Information you send us travels over a secure, encrypted connection. Team accounts need a password and are locked after repeated wrong tries.
How long we keep it
We keep your record while you are working with us, and for three years after your last contact with us. Then we delete it, unless you ask us to keep it.
Your choices
You can ask us at any time to:
- Show you what we have about you
- Correct something that is wrong
- Delete your record
You can update most of your own details by signing in with your BTL number. For anything else, email [email protected].
Fees
Registered families pay nothing for our programs. The only service we charge for is resume writing for people who are not registered with us. We never charge for anything related to your immigration case.
What we will never do
We will never ask for your password, or claim we can speed up your immigration case. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice.
For people in South Africa
If you live in South Africa, or we handle your information in South Africa, South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) gives you these protections as well:
- Extra care for sensitive information. Some information, such as race or ethnic origin, religion, health, criminal records and information about children, gets extra protection. We use it only when your case needs it, and only with your consent or where the law allows.
- Children. We collect information about children only from a parent or guardian.
- Information sent outside South Africa. Our records are kept outside South Africa. By registering, you agree that your information may be sent to and stored in the United States, where we protect it as this notice describes.
- Our information officer. You can reach the person responsible for privacy at our organization at [email protected].
- Complaints. If you are not happy with how we handled your information, please tell us first. You also have the right to complain to South Africa's Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.
